MAY I ASK A PERSONAL FAVOR OF EVERYONE?
If you would all humor me on this request I would really appreciate it. Several members have pointed out the difficulty with receiving and printing (especially) messages from me and other members. the problem has to do with number of characters per line. This causes problems for Bill D, our Webmaster, when he want to immortalize your contribution on our Pages.
It is my understanding that some laser printers will only print 68 characters per line. If a line exceeds that by one word then the printer goes to the next line, prints that word and goes down to the next line to complete the sentence. Results in lots of papers use which was not necessary as well as toner required for header and footer. For those of you using Eudora Light or Eudora Pro for your Email, the solution is simple. If you would move your CURSOR up to SPECIAL and click left mouse button, then select SETTINGS and click. From the SETTINGS window select FONTS & DISPLAY and click. Then enter 68 in MESSAGE WINDOW WIDTH, click OK and you are all set. Thanks much for your cooperation in this. Should help all of us along the way.

FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS HOME PAGE!
For any and all of you who have not yet visited our home page, do yourself a favor and check it out!
To those of you who have visited our home page before, but did not get a chance to visit the "FAQ" (Frequently Asked Questions) section, do yourselves a favor and visit this section. I learned a lot while visiting this section and made it a point to print it out so I will have it close at hand when needed. Items currently covered in this section are listed below:

  • Do you have to be fifty or older to be a member here?
  • What about unpleasant people who post nasty stuff here?
  • Why doesn't my name have a blue underline?
  • Hey, sometimes the underline is purple...why?
  • The system is so slow. How can I speed things up?
  • Graphics (especially the big ones) slow things down so much. How can I stop them from loading?
  • What's the best way to set the "Refresh Rate"?
  • How do I make those cute buttons everybody is using?
  • How can I get a picture by my name?
  • How can I get a picture from outside the PICS library?
  • How can I get my own picture by my name?
  • I'd like my own Home Page. How can I do this?
  • What do the two splats "**" before a person's name mean?
  • How do I view the current Guest Book?
  • How do I meet the regular users here?
  • How do I post my own biography in the Guest Book?
  • How can I get rid of my entry in the Guest Book?
  • Where did the idea of 50+ Home Pages start?
  • Where can I read about the "50+ Friends Group"?
  • My question isn't in the above list, or I could improve on the answer. How can I do this?
  • What does LOL MEAN? ROTFL? :-)?
  • Why do Bill and Marion do all this?
When you find a confused newbie on line, you may want to paste the URL for the FAQ page under a button. You could say:
"Yours and other questions might be answered in our FAQ at http://www.colorpro.com/~color/50plus/50faq.html -- press the button to go there, and bookmark it if you like!"
Consider putting the above blurb in your own scratch pad or a notepad to make it easy to past into the chat box.
I just can't thank member Bill Dawes (owner of Colorpro Communications Services and Editor of the COLORING Pages) enough for all that he has done for us on our home pages. I feel that each of you would enjoy visiting Bill's home pages located at:
http://www.colorpro.com/~color/wmdawes
Thanks again Bill, outstanding home pages you did for us. One more thing, my answer to the question "Why do Bill and Marion do all this" is the same as Bill's. Whatever time and effort I put into "Friends of 50+" is a bald-faced labor of love for me. I really do enjoy it, and people in it.

FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS LOGO CONTEST
Would be nice to have a "LOGO" for our home page and for the group. Along those lines would be nice if our members would work up their own version of group logo which would then be submitted for consideration. I would expect that all of the submissions would be evaluated and a final 10 or 12 selected for voting on by membership at large. Much more on this in next weeks letter. Now would be a good time to start those creative juices flowing and see what you can come up with.
Bill suggests that you attempt to send him submissions either as JPG's or GIF's to logos_AT_colorpro.com. If you use Eudora, you may attach your artwork to a message by doing _Message, Attach file, and following the prompts there. He prefers files of 15K or less. A smaller version of 5K or so would be nice for use on non-title pages. Thanks to all in advance.

FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS MASTER LIST OF MEMBERS
The long awaited Master List of Members is finally here. If you find an error in your information, please Email me the necessary info to correct it. I have only listed Email address where the member has indicated that it was OK to do so. UNLISTED indicates that the member did not want to have theirs listed or I have not yet received an OK from them to list it. Regional and Zone Coordinators please use this list to extract members in your areas. Thanks.
The Master List of Member is being sent as a separate message, since some of you will find your mail readers won't take very long messages!

GRIEF COUNSELING SUPPORT GROUP
As most of you know, we now have a support group which consists of members who have dealt with or are dealing with any form of long-term illness, terminal illness or loss of a loved one.
This leaders of this group are BRNWRSALR and BELLE STAR.

SUPPORT GROUP FOR ALZHEIMER'S AND RELATED DEMENTIAS
A suggestion has been made that, in addition to the grief counseling support group shown above, we have a support group for members who are dealing with Alzheimer's and related dementias. This is an excellent suggestion. Any member interested in participating in this group please Email me. Thanks.

RESEARCH SPECIALIST
One of our members recently asked if $2,000 for a Miracle Ear was a fair price. This caused another member to suggest that we call on our members and see if there were any who had some expertise in researching such information and would be willing to do so when members had questions such as this. Often times just knowing where information of this type can be readily obtained can help others considerably. Please let me hear from you if you would be interested in providing this type of service for our members. Thanks.

REGIONAL COORDINATORS
We still need Regional Coordinators for following regions in the USA.

  • Alaska
  • Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi

  • District of Columbia

  • New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
  • Montana, Wyoming

We have a Regional Coordinator for Ontario, Canada. Regional Coordinators are needed in each of the other Canadian Provinces.
We have Regional Coordinators for the countries shown below:
  • Australia
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom
Volunteers for Regional Coordinators for all other inter- national countries are requested.

GRAPHICS ON THE NET
Lots of our members have questions at one time or another about the use of "graphics".
Member "Good Girl" has written a tutorial which might help you get started. You will find the tutorial in FAQ section of our home pages under "How can I get my own picture by my name? It would be well worth your while to visit here and see what she has to say. Most informative.

USE OF GIFS ON CHAT LINES
As one of our members was good enough to point out, the February, 1996, issue of NET GUIDE had an interesting article on page 76 entitled WAR ON THE WEB.
The first sentence stated "in HOLLYWOOD, there's no such thing as a harmless INFRINGEMENT on a studio's TRADEMARKED property." And "Here's how to stay out for the DOGHOUSE". For those of you who have not seen this article, it makes for interesting reading.
At least one of our members reported that she has received ugly letters from unknown sources because of her GIFS.
As a member said, what a shame as no doubt much we see in its beauty and entertainment is done in innocence. Plagiarism in pictures, say what?

LIFE ON THE INTERNET
One of our members, CASSIE, worked on a film documentary called "Life on the Internet". This documentary has already been broadcast on The Discovery Channel and is soon to be released to PBS.
This is an EXTREMELY interesting show and, as adults, each of us will get a lot out of each half hour show.
Take a look and see what you think. Each of the half hour segments deals with a different subject. It is also about some of the people who made the Internet happen as well as the people who developed all the different aspects of it. i.e., the Yahoo kids, the Virtual Radio kids, the man who invented the internet, and on and on.
Cassie has contacted the producer of the series to see if he knows when the air time on PBS will be. As soon as we find out that information will be passed on to you. Sounds like a real interesting and informative series. I plan on recording it for future reference.

CYBER LINGO (Chat shorthand)
One of our members, LEONESS, was kind enough to share her collection of "Cyber Lingo" with us. Hopefully I can copy it all down here without to many mistakes. If there are mistakes here they are mine and not hers.

      LINGO --- MEANING
  • afk --- away from keyboard, as in "I as afk, bak now"
  • btw --- by the way...
  • LTNS --- Long Time No See
  • brb --- be right back- - usually used when running downstairs for a cuppa or leaving the 'room' to try something out before you offer it as advice.
  • lol --- lots of laughs
  • rofl --- rolling on the floor laughing
  • roflmao --- rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
  • --- grin
  • --- big grin
  • jk --- joking (not used much)
  • --- smile
  • ::: --- action description, as in :::::::::locking door so Buck can't escape::::::::::
  • awk --- awk
  • aargh --- aargh
  • {{}} --- hugs for a friend, as in "{{{{Belle}}}} how are you today?
  • ** --- kisses - not given out freely - "Buck**, Hello!"
Pictures are usually viewed sideways; this practice started in the old DOS days -- people used to create pictorial DOS prompts.
  • C[_]~~~ = hot steaming coffee
  • {_}c = beer mug
  • _AT__AT__AT__AT__AT_ = Danish, anyone?
  • (o) = bagel
  • _AT_--> = rose
  • :-) = smile
  • :-( = sad face
  • ;) = wink
  • ;-> = wicked wink
  • 8-) = guy with glasses
Thank you very much ((((LEONESS)))) for sharing with all of us. We do appreciate it. :-)

FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS MEMBERSHIP
Would you believe that we now have 140 plus members and are rapidly approaching the 150 mark. That is a remarkable growth rate. Thanks to all of you for keeping the faith and passing the word.

FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS HANDY HINTS
One member suggested that we have a handy hints section in back of our cook book. Something along the lines of "Hints from Heloise" (for example).
Sounds like a great suggestion to me and there must be lots of little things each of you do to make life easier that you could contribute to this section. Please let my know your feelings on it. Thanks.

CYBER HUMOR
The following was contributed by member ARTIST. Hope you all enjoy it.

Here's an easy game to play.
Here's an easy thing to say.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort.
And the address of the memory
      makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and your double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash
      they your situation is hopeless,
and your system is gonna crash!!

      You can't say this?
      What a shame, sir!
      We'll find you
      another game, sir!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
says the network is connected to the button on the mouse,
but packets want to tunnel on another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
and the screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the windows are as wavy as a souse.
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC,
Then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to
      Ram your Rom,
Quickly turn off the computer and
be sure to tell your mom!!

HANDLE/NAME GENDER BENDERS
A few members have expressed concern over how individuals are perceived with respect to "gender" while on the net.
While I personally have always been of the "call me anything but call me in time for supper" clan, people quite often have the mistaken impression that "Marion" is a girls name. Might well be in some instances but not in my case. I really do have thick skin and about the only way you could hurt my feelings would be to step on my fingers. :-)
I know of some instances where individuals have selected a handle which has no implication of either male or female.
I would appreciate input from each of you with respect to this issue. Thanks

NET CONNECTIONS
We now have two locations of businesses which have computer on site which are hooked into the Internet and are there for customers use. Their business names and locations are show below:

  • KAFFEE 101, 134 S. Broadway, Coos Bay, Oregon (1 terminal)
  • TONY'S INTERNET CAFE, 206 W. Magnolia, Bellingham, Washington (45 miles S of Canadian border) (3 terminals)
If you know of any such restaurants, cafe's, coffee shops, etc., in your area, send their name and locations in to me so that they may be included on our list for our members who travel.

SINGLE FRIENDS OF 50 PLUS
A couple of members have indicated that perhaps there might be some way for single friends of 50 plus to get to know each other, perhaps Email might be the best way to accomplish. Would appreciate impute from any members who would be interested in this. Thanks.

TUBBY IS HAVING SERVER PROBLEMS
Tubby asked me to tell all her friends on 50+ that the only reason you have not seen her chatting recently is that she is having massive server problems.
Hope to see you back in the chat room soon Tubby, meanwhile hang in there. I know from personal experience what it is like to be cut off from 50+ chat line. Not a pleasant experience.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS
I'm quite sure that there are many things that I have forgotten to include in this weeks letter. Sorry about that but those things will give me a running start on next weeks letter.
Thanks again to each and every one of you Friends of 50 Plus members for making this thing come together. I look forward to chatting with each of you on the net.

Marion Rogers (Buck _AT_ Coos Bay, OR)
