"I WANT MY WBS 50+ CHAT LINE!!!!!!"
Imagine by now all of us are well aware that WBS's entire system was "down and out" since sometime the evening of 1/29/96 and was still "down and out" this morning and most of the afternoon. GREAT NEWS - I just checked and they are back on line now and people are in there chat- ting. Really missed the old room and all of you my friends. CAROLE and EASY RIDER have both made arrangements for other chat rooms and more on that in next letter (sooner if WBS 50+ Chat Line goes down again).

HARD TO BELIEVE
Another week has passed and our numbers continue to grow. As of this letter we have a total of 119 members, an increase of 29 members in just one week.

IDENTITY OF MEMBERS ON CHAT LINE
As you will recall, we have been looking for a way to identify ourselves while on the chat line. My thanks to CAROLE for solving this problem. Her solution is easy to accomplish and as easy to recognize on the chat line. Just place two stars ("**") in front of your handle/name as shown below:

    **Buck _AT_ Coos Bay, OR
Would really appreciate it if all members would add the two stars in front of their handles/names. Sure makes it easy to see who is in the group and also gives us the chance to talk to those who do not belong about joining us.

VOLUNTEERS
As all of you should know by now, it is not necessary to volunteer for anything to be part of this group. You can be as active or as inactive as you desire and as your time, energy and talents dictate.
I would like to extend my thanks to those of you who did step forward to fill a number of positions with our ever growing group.

A suggestion was made that a format be developed and used so that all chapters of our cook book would be uniform. Excellent suggestion. Any member who has a talent for this type thing is invited to work up a form that could be used by Email and send it to me so I can review with individual members who are keeping the various chapters of our Cook Book. Thanks in advance for your efforts.

SUPPORT GROUP
KB made an excellent suggestion about our forming our own Email Support Group. Members of this group would consist of those of us who have dealt with or are dealing with any form of long-term illness, terminal illness or loss of a loved one. Thanks KB for your suggestion.
Along this line, we have a new member of our group, Robert Taylor, who is an ex-navy vet (Viet Nam). He has had informal training in grief counseling, mostly learned from bedside nursing. He has also worked psyche, with mentally retarded children, and drove an ambulance for a few years. He recently retired from working at a VA Hospital. Robert has a total of 22 years in the medical. He has also done volunteer hospice work. We are very fortunate to have Robert as a member. I know you will all be happy to hear that Robert has volunteered to form and organize our 50+ Support Unit. Thanks from all of us Robert.

HOME PAGE FOR OUR GROUP ON WORLD WIDE WEB
For those of you who do not know, Bill Dawes has offered not only to construct a home page for us but also put it on WWW for us.
Each of you should visit Bill's home page and see his work. While there please take time to register. While still in the "demonstration stages", Bill has put some 50+ pages on the net.

MASTER LIST - DIRECTORY OF MEMBERS
Many of you have made suggestions about a master list of members. Such a list is in progress and I hope to have it ready to go out with next weeks letter. The list will be given to members only and will show each members handle/name (the one they use in 50+ Chat Line) and general location. It will only show Email address if the individual member has it is O.K. In cases where members do not want their Email address on the list, or I have not received their permission to list it, the master list will show "UNLISTED". Some members have suggested it would be nice if members would share their specialty skill with others and this would be added to the Master List. Others have also suggested that if would be of value for each member to indicate if they are using a PC or MAC computer. This information could also be shown on the master list. If you do not mind sharing this info with other members please include the following info in your acknowledgment of this letter.

  • Email address: YES or NO as appropriate - (if yes I will show on master list)
  • Specialty Skill: List if you do not mind sharing with other members
  • Type Computer: PC or MAC as appropriate if you do not mind sharing with other members
I do appreciate your cooperation in this. Thanks much.

COFFEE SHOPS ON THE NET
Last week I had coffee with another member of our group, Artist, who I met on 50+ Chat Line. As luck would have it, the first thing that greeted us when we walked into the coffee shop was a computer, sitting by itself at a table, which was on and hooked into the Net. Best part is it was there for the use of their customers. Their only request is that each customer limit time on the net to 15 minutes (seems reasonable).
Started me thinking there must be hundreds (if not thousands) of such places around this old world. And wouldn't it be nice for our those of us who might be going around to different places on vacation, business, or whatever, if we had a listing of such places in areas we were going to be in or drive through.
Any volunteers out there to gather this type info in their areas? I know several of you have expressed an interest in this. Do let me know your individual thoughts on this. A world wide listing should also prove to be very useful. I would suggest that any place you consider should be the kind of place where you would take your family. Let me start this off by giving the name and location of the coffee shop that Artist and I were at.
KAFFEE 101, 134 S. Broadway, Coos Bay, Oregon

MEMBERS WEB PAGE SITES
This was mentioned in last weeks letter to members. Still is a good idea. Hope to give info in next weeks letter on where to send your web page location (address). Please bear with me on this.

TOURIST INFORMATION AND TRAVEL TIPS
An updated listing will be provided in next weeks letter. In the meanwhile do continue to let me know if you are willing to provide info about your area to members who might be interested.

ZONE AND REGION NEWSLETTERS
Several members have volunteered to assist in preparation of Zone and Regional newsletters. Thanks to each of you and there is room for more volunteers for this. Names and Email addresses of volunteers will be forwarded to Regional and Zone Coordinators.
Several members has suggested that our newsletters have a "jokes and humor" section. Sounds like a great idea to me.
Another member had a couple of great "YOU KNOW YOUR ADDICTED TO THE NET WHEN" sayings. Seems like this might be worthy of its own part of each newsletter. Sure would like to hear your thoughts on this one.

CYBERSPACE LINGO
It is my understanding that one of our members has a complete list of "cyberspace lingo" and might be convinced to share it with all of us. Sounds great to me and I will definitely be approaching that member prior to next weeks letter to see if she will share with us. Thanks in advance for sharing.

INDIVIDUAL BIOS
Several members have expressed concern over info in their "BIOS" getting into the hands of "cybercreeps". Each of you should know that these "BIOS" will only be shared with members.

CURRENT EVENTS SECTION
Several of you have indicated an interest in having a "current events" section of the newsletter. Information in this section could be maintained by editors of the various newsletters and might include such information as birthdays and get well Email cards, etc. I would really appreciate your input on this. Thanks.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
I have been experiencing may problems with my server, who in turn has been experiencing severe growing pains and having a hard time with updating equipment often enough and soon enough to handle their ever increasing base of subscribers. To get to the point, I will be switching to a new server effective 2/1/96.
Bad news is that I will have a new Email address and at this time but have no idea at all what that will be.
Good news is that I will be holding onto my old server until close of business on 2/15/96 so my present Email address should work fine until then.
I will let you all know my new Email address in next weeks letter and, of course, once I have it I will show it when on the chat line.

Let me thank each and every one of you again for making the 50+ Chat Line Friendship Group such a success. Look forward to chatting with each of you in 50+.
